Robert L. Bernstein (1923-2019) was a distinguished publisher and human rights advocate who led Random House as president for 25 years. During a 1973 trip to Moscow with American publishers, Bernstein was inspired to create the organization now known as Human Rights Watch, reflecting his commitment to global justice. His memoir, Speaking Freely: My Life in Publishing and Human Rights, chronicles his influential career and dedication to human rights.
